Nerve Conduction Velocity

What are NCV and EMG studies?

Nerve conduction velocity studies record the speed at which impulses travel through nerves and measure electrical responses. EMG records electrical activity in muscle tissue and is used to distinguish neuropathy from muscle disease (myopathy). These tests often are used in combination and are referred to as EMG/NCV studies.

What do these tests show?

EMG and NCV are important diagnostic tools that help determine the cause of muscle weakness, spasms, paralysis, or pain in the arms, hands, legs, or face. They also help determine if the disease involves the spinal cord, nerves, muscles, or nerve muscle junctions.

Who performs the testing?

Physical Therapists board certified by the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties as Clinical Specialists in Clinical Electrophysiologic Physical Therapy perform the testing. Results are forwarded to the referring physician who is able to use this information in combination with other diagnostic tools to clarify diagnosis and appropriate treatment regimens
